To create a sticker from a photo, start with the original full-resolution image, crop tightly to the subject, remove or keep the background, add a 2-3mm border if you want a shaped cut, set the canvas to the finished size, and export at 300 pixels per inch. Then print on sticker paper or order the sticker printed.
Choose the right photo
The sticker can only be as sharp as the photo you start with. Before editing anything, check these points.
- Use the original file. A photo forwarded through a messaging app or saved from social media is usually compressed. Ask for the original from the person who took it.
- Look for clear edges. A dog against a plain wall cuts out cleanly; a dog in long grass does not.
- Good light matters. Bright, even light keeps colour and detail. Dark indoor photos print muddy.
- Faces fill the frame. On a 51mm sticker, a full-body shot of a person becomes a tiny figure.
Check the resolution against the size
Print needs far more pixels than a screen. Aim for 300 pixels per inch at the finished size. This table gives a quick guide.
| Finished sticker | Pixels needed (approx.) | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| 37mm circle | 450 x 450 | Almost any phone photo |
| 64mm circle | 760 x 760 | Phone photo, cropped moderately |
| 76mm x 51mm | 900 x 600 | Phone photo |
| 100mm x 100mm | 1,200 x 1,200 | Phone photo, light crop |
| 300mm x 300mm | 3,500 x 3,500 | Camera or recent phone, original file |
Cropping removes pixels, so a heavy zoom on a small part of a photo can drop below what you need. When you upload a file for printing, very low-resolution images are flagged before payment so you can swap them out.
Remove the background, or keep it
Cut-out photo stickers
Most phones and many free editors can lift a subject from its background. Zoom in on hair, ears and fingers afterwards, where automatic tools leave halos or chop details. Save the result as a PNG with a transparent background.
Framed photo stickers
Keeping the background and printing in a circle, square or oval is simpler and often looks better for group shots, landscapes and anything with a busy scene. A thin white or coloured frame helps it read as a finished sticker.
Add a border for shaped cutting
A cut that follows a photo outline exactly tends to lose fine bits like whiskers and stray hair. Adding an outline of 2-3mm around the subject gives the cutter a smooth path and makes the sticker look deliberate. Most editors have a “stroke” or “outline” effect; set it in white for the classic look or in a brand colour.
Set the size and export
- Create a canvas at the exact finished size, such as 75mm x 75mm.
- Place the photo and border, leaving 3mm of safe space inside the edge for anything important.
- For framed designs, extend the background 2mm past the edge as bleed.
- Export as PDF or PNG at 300ppi.
Paper or film for photo stickers
Gloss paper makes photos look bright and saturated, which suits party favours, gifts and scrapbooks. Matt paper calms reflections and takes handwriting. For a photo sticker that goes on a water bottle, lunch box or laptop, choose polypropylene with a lamination, which shrugs off handling and damp.
For paper photo stickers in many shapes, personalised photo stickers come in circles, ovals and rectangles in matt or gloss. For a cut-out pet or portrait on tougher film, use die cut stickers.
Ideas for photo stickers
- Pet faces for dog walkers, groomers and proud owners.
- Wedding photos as thank-you seals on favour boxes.
- Baby and grandchild faces on gift tags.
- Product photos for small makers who want packaging seals that show what is inside.
- Team photos on reward stickers for clubs and classes.
Common problems and quick fixes
A grey or coloured halo round the cut-out
The background removal left a fringe. Zoom to 200 percent and erase the edge by a pixel or two, or add the white outline, which covers small fringes.
Skin tones look orange or grey
Phone photos are often edited for bright screens. Lower saturation slightly and check the image in CMYK preview if your editor has one.
The sticker looks blurry when printed
The image did not have enough pixels for the size. Either use the original file, choose a smaller sticker, or crop less.
Getting help with tricky photos
Some photos need more than an automatic cut-out: tangled backgrounds, low light, or a group shot that needs rearranging. Our artwork and design service can prepare the file for you. If you just want a simple sheet of the same photo in several sizes, stickers on a sheet is the quickest order.
Questions
What resolution should a photo be for a sticker?
Aim for 300 pixels per inch at the finished size. A 64mm circle needs roughly 760 x 760 pixels, and a 100mm square roughly 1,200 x 1,200.
Can I use a photo from social media for a sticker?
It may work at small sizes, but social media compresses photos. The original file from the camera or phone always prints sharper.
How do I make a photo sticker with no background?
Use a background removal tool, tidy the edges by hand, add a 2-3mm outline, and save as a PNG with transparency. Then order it die cut so the sticker follows the shape.
Gloss or matt for photo stickers?
Gloss gives brighter colours for gifts and favours. Matt reduces glare and is easier to write on.
Are photo stickers waterproof?
Paper photo stickers are for indoor, dry use. For bottles, lunch boxes or outdoor use, choose laminated polypropylene.
